The Sheldon Lions have raised money for many people and organisations over the years, below are just a few that have been close to our hearts:
BBQ’s
Again we held two social BBQ’s one by the river in Stratford-upon Avon and the other for Madame President in her second year in post. Another excuse for a knees up.
Cotswolds Trip
Several members accompanied over 45 elderly resident of Sheldon to the Women’s Institute tea room in Church Lench where sandwiches and cream teas were enjoyed by all.
Following this successful outing, two trips have been organised for this year.
Fetes
This year we attended Shirley Donkey Derby, Kenilworth Carnival, Shirley Carnival organised by Shirley Lions and the Festival at Sheldon Country Park. These events were well attended by the members and helped to boost the funds for us to spend during the year.
Fish and Chip Supper
In addition to walking the streets with Santa, Birmingham Sheldon Lions Club traditionally sends food or boxes of biscuits to some of the elderly residents of Sheldon. This year we again organised a fish and chip supper at St Giles Church hall. Over 90 residents attended and with entertainment provided by the Optomists Choir. A good sing-a-long was enjoyed by all.
Jack and Alfie
We have continued to support Jack and Alfie and their dedicated families this year. Both boys have shown great improvements. The support provided demonstrates the family oriented nature of Birmingham Sheldon Lions Club. Jack suffers from Cerebral Palsy and Sheldon Lions helped in both 2006 and 2007 with Hotel accommodation fees whilst Jack was receiving treatment at the Bobath Centre in London. Jack’s parents needed adjoining rooms in the hotel so that Jack would be able to obtain a good nights sleep and rest after a long tiring day at the Bobath Centre.
Lions supporting Lions
Sheldon Lions have supported and organised additional events to raise funds for the Grand-children of the long standing secretary of Birmingham Sheldon Lions Club. These events have included an evening at the Black Country Living Museum, discos and even selling dresses at Wedding Fairs.
Raft Race
On the 21st June 2009 two crews entered the annual raft race event organised by Stratford and District, and Wellesboure Lions Clubs. Following the eventful first 100yards where crew were lost overboard and one raft completely overturned. The two rafts joined forces and in a record breaking time finished the seven mile course in seven and a half hours!! The efforts of both crews were recognised by being awarded the fastest Lions Club trophy and the trophy for Guts and Determination.
Santa
This year not only have we walked the streets and collected outside the local supermarkets, but with lots of hard work from Lions Brian Miles, Mick and Shirley Harris we also helped Santa see lots of children at his grotto in the Sheldon Community Centre. Again our Christmas Fundraisers have been very successful despite the recession.
Theatre trip
In a new venture Sheldon Lions took residents of Sheldon to see the Union Theatre’s production of ‘Charlie’s Aunt’ at Dorridge Village Hall. The excellent performance was enjoyed by all attending. Hopefully another event for this years diary.
This is just a tiny sample of the enormous achievements that Sheldon Lions Club has been involved with recently. We are determined to have many more great achievements to come!
